Hi, my name is Jennifer. Our class is currently doing a project on New Zealand Artists, and I have chosen you to study on. It would help a lot if you could answer a few questions for me. Here they are: Why does Diana Adams like to paint about plants and land?

Hi Jennifer

Here is her reply to my e-mail:

Thanks for your interest in my paintings. Unfortunately I just don’t have time to answer all the questions I am sent so I have attached a file with some information about me and various questions answered in the past.
I hope this helps.
Regards
Diana Adams

Here are some other sources of information about Diana Adams:

Using the information I had collected, I pieced together the answers for my questions. Here they are:

Answers:

Question 1:
I like this painting because it is extremely bold. As I was browsing through all of Diana Adams’ paintings, it stood out so much. As well as being bold, it is also very detailed with a lovely choice of colours and blending. It reflects kiwiana culture since it is a native plant to New Zealand. Also, the koru, when simplified, is a maori pattern that is often used on carvings and tikis. But, that is not all. The koru is also the logo for Air New Zealand!

Question 2:
Why does Diana Adams like to paint about plants and land?
When Diana was young, she did a lot of tramping and tock climbing, which took her all over New Zealand. While doing so, she found out that landscape inspires her. Whenever she is out in the hills, she has a kind of spiritual feeling. So, to keep that feeling, she paints about it.

Question 3:
What inspired Diana Adams to first start painting?
Diana Adams first became interested in painting in year 3, as she had a very artistic teacher who was a potter. Then, she really got into painting when she did a project in form 7 on famous New Zealand artists. She studied Rita Angus, Robin White, Rudolph Golpas, Tony Fomisson and Don Binney just to name a few.

Question 4:
What features does Diana Adams like to include in her paintings?
Diana Adams likes to use high quality paints and brushes. She likes to paint on canvas with 5cm deep edges and she likes to paint over the edges of the canvas. Also, Diana likes to put something light next to something dark to make it look effective.

Question 5:
What are some names of Diana Adams’ most famous paintings?
Diana Adams’ top four paintings are in this order:
1. Koru
2. Rangitoto
3. Secluded Cove
4. River’s Journey

Question 6:
What awards has Diana Adams won over the years?
Diana Adams was a finalist in the Telecom Art Awards in 1998. She also won a Merit Award in the Gourmet Province Art Award in 2001.

Question 7:
When was Diana Adams born?
Diana Adams was born in 1969 in Canterbury.
Question 8:
What colours does Diana Adams like to use in her paintings?
Diana Adams likes to use deep, bold colours, but the colours change depending on the mood or setting of the painting.

Question 9:
How does Diana Adams’ artwork represent New Zealand?
Diana Adams’ artwork represents New Zealand because all of her paintings are about New Zealand landscapes or native plants.

I am going to present all of my information on a mini science fair board.

Things I have done in order:

1. I have collected a black piece of A3 paper and folded it into the shape of a mini science fair board.
2. I have created a title piece for my mini science fair board. I then cut slits on the board and the title piece so that they could fit together.
